Why long runs fall apart after mile 8 usually has less to do with mile 8 itself and more to do with what happened during the miles—and sometimes the weeks—before it.
You start your long run feeling fantastic.
Mile 3? Easy.
Mile 5? Still cruising.
Then somewhere around mile 8, 9, or 10, everything changes.
Your legs get heavy. Your pace slips. Your breathing feels harder. The remaining miles suddenly look enormous.
If you’re training for your first half marathon, this experience can make you wonder whether you’re actually ready to run 13.1 miles.
Here’s the good news:
There is nothing physiologically magical about mile 8.
For one runner, trouble might start at mile 7. For another, mile 10. The important part is understanding why the run started falling apart.
Most of the time, the problem falls into some combination of five categories:
- Starting too fast
- Fueling too late—or not fueling at all
- Running beyond your current endurance
- Heat, humidity, hills, or other conditions
- The normal increase in physical and mental effort as a long run progresses
And that leads to one of our favorite coaching reminders:
You don’t solve mile 8 at mile 8. You train for it.
Why Does Running Get So Hard After Mile 8?
One reason the late-run crash feels so mysterious is that the mistake that caused it may have happened much earlier.
Going slightly too fast during the first few miles might feel completely manageable.
Skipping early fuel might not bother you at all.
Running on a hot day might initially feel fine.
But a long run gives all of those small decisions time to accumulate.
Eventually, the bill comes due.
That’s why the first place to investigate isn’t mile 8.
It’s mile 1.
1. You Started Your Long Run Too Fast
This may be the simplest mistake to make.
You’re rested. Your legs feel good. Maybe you’ve had some coffee. Your watch shows a pace that looks encouraging.
So you run just a little faster.
The problem is that the beginning of a long run can be deceptive. An effort that feels sustainable for 30 minutes may not be sustainable for 90 minutes or two hours.
Running harder also increases your reliance on carbohydrate for energy. That doesn’t mean running faster somehow “turns off” fat burning—the body uses a mixture of fuels—but the balance shifts as intensity rises.
The practical lesson is much simpler than the physiology:
The beginning of your long run should feel almost suspiciously easy.
If the workout calls for an easy long run, you should generally be able to speak in sentences during those early miles.
Don’t try to “bank time” because you feel good.
You aren’t trying to win mile 2.
You’re preparing yourself to handle miles 9, 10, 11, and eventually 13.1.

2. You’re Waiting Too Long to Fuel
Another common beginner mistake is treating fuel as an emergency response.
You wait until your legs feel empty.
Then you take a gel.
But fueling during a long run works much better as a proactive strategy than a rescue mission.
Your muscles and liver store carbohydrate as glycogen. Those stores aren’t infinite, and longer exercise increases the importance of having carbohydrate available.
That doesn’t mean every runner suddenly runs out of glycogen at mile 8.
It also doesn’t mean every 8-mile run requires exactly the same amount of fuel.
Duration, intensity, your pre-run nutrition, individual tolerance, and the rest of your training all matter.
That’s why we prefer thinking about fueling in terms of time and effort rather than assigning a magical gel to a particular mile marker.
Fuel Before You Feel Empty
If you’re going to use gels, chews, sports drinks, or another carbohydrate source during your half marathon, practice using them during training.
Your long run isn’t just training your legs.
It’s also your opportunity to learn:
- What fuel your stomach tolerates
- How often you prefer to fuel
- How much fluid you need with it
- How carrying and opening fuel works while running
- What you’ll actually want to consume late in a race
Race day should not be the first time you discover that a particular gel doesn’t agree with your stomach.

3. Your Endurance Isn’t There Yet—and That’s Okay
This one isn’t nearly as exciting as blaming your shoes, electrolytes, running form, or the flavor of gel you bought.
Sometimes nine miles feels extremely difficult because you’re still becoming a nine-mile runner.
That’s training.
Your cardiovascular fitness can improve relatively quickly when you begin running consistently. But the rest of your body also needs time to adapt to the repeated loading of longer runs.
This is particularly important for beginners because feeling fitter can create a dangerous temptation:
If six miles felt that good, why not run nine?

The goal isn’t to survive one heroic long run.
It’s to progressively build enough training that the distance stops being heroic.
You don’t become capable of running 10 miles by surviving one miserable 10-mile run. You build that ability over weeks of training.
What About the 10% Rule?
You’ve probably heard that runners should never increase weekly mileage by more than 10%.
It’s a useful reminder not to increase training recklessly, but it shouldn’t be treated as an immutable biological law.
What’s more important for beginner runners is avoiding abrupt jumps in training that greatly exceed what their bodies have recently been prepared to handle.
That applies not only to total weekly mileage, but also to suddenly making one individual run dramatically longer.

4. Heat and Humidity Can Move the Wall Closer
Sometimes your training hasn’t changed at all.
The weather has.
Running generates heat, and your body has to get rid of it. In warm conditions, more blood flow is directed toward the skin to help with cooling. Sweat increases, fluid losses accumulate, and your cardiovascular system has more work to do.
That’s one reason your heart rate may gradually rise during a long run even when your pace stays the same.
Add humidity and cooling becomes even more difficult because sweat doesn’t evaporate as effectively.
The result?
Your normal pace may no longer represent your normal effort.
This is where GPS watches can get runners into trouble.
If a particular pace felt easy on a cool morning, that doesn’t mean you should force the same number on a hot, humid day.
Slow down.
Use effort.
Accept that today’s conditions changed the workout.
Hydration and Electrolytes Matter—But They Aren’t Fuel
Long, hot runs may also increase your fluid and sodium needs, particularly if you’re a heavy or salty sweater.
But don’t confuse hydration with fueling.
Carbohydrates provide energy. Electrolytes primarily help with fluid balance and normal physiological function.
You may need both during some long runs, but one doesn’t automatically replace the other.

5. The Last Miles Are Supposed to Feel Harder
There’s another possibility beginners sometimes overlook:
Nothing went wrong.
Mile 9 simply feels harder than mile 2 because you’ve already been running for a long time.
Your muscles are fatigued. Your energy demands have accumulated. You may be hotter and thirstier. And maintaining the same pace requires more concentration.
That isn’t necessarily evidence that you’ve failed the workout.
The mistake is panicking when the effort rises.
Shrink the Finish Line
If you’re struggling late in a long run, stop mentally running all the remaining miles at once.
Instead of:
“I still have three miles left.”
Try:
“Let’s get to the next mile marker.”
Or the next intersection.
Or the next five minutes.
Then reassess.
You can also perform a simple check:
- How is my breathing?
- Am I tensing my shoulders?
- Am I still running at the appropriate effort?
- Did I follow my fueling plan?
- Do I need fluid?
- Is this ordinary fatigue—or actual pain that needs attention?
There’s an important difference between the normal discomfort of a challenging endurance run and pain that is sharp, worsening, changes your gait, or otherwise concerns you. A training plan is never a reason to ignore a potential injury.
What to Do on Your Next Long Run
You don’t need to memorize exercise physiology before your next Saturday long run.
Try this instead:
- Start slower than your ego wants to. Let the first miles feel easy.
- Run the early portion conversationally when the workout calls for an easy long run.
- Decide on your fueling strategy before you leave. Don’t wait for the crash.
- Practice race-day nutrition during training.
- Adjust for heat, humidity, hills, and altitude.
- Break difficult late miles into smaller goals.
- Build your long run progressively. Don’t turn one good week into a massive distance jump.
- Expect the final miles to require more effort. Harder doesn’t automatically mean something went wrong.
The Real Fix for the Mile 8 Crash
It’s tempting to search for one solution.
A better gel.
A new pair of shoes.
A supplement.
A motivational trick.
Any of those might help with a specific problem, but successful half marathon training isn’t built around one hack.
Pacing, fueling, recovery, weekly training, and long-run progression have to work together.

Mile 8 usually isn’t the problem. What happened before mile 8 is the problem.

So don’t wait until mile 8 to fix mile 8.
